Analysing a nominal and scale variable
Introduction
If you like to compare averages to see if one group of respondents had a different average than other groups you might use the instructions in this section.
1) First get an impression of the sample data by determining the means and standard deviation for each category in the nominal variable.
2) Visualise those results using a split histogram or side-by-side boxplot
3a) Then check if the nominal variable has an influence on the scale variable by performing a one-way ANOVA
3b) If so, you might want to know which categories then have a significant different mean, which can be figured out by using a post-hoc test
3c) As a finishing touch it is a good idea to add an effect size to indicate how big the differences are.
4) Then write up the entire report.
Let's begin with the first step on the next page.
